How to Clean Carpet

Keeping your carpets clean doesn't just make your home look great,  it also extends the life of your flooring and creates a healthier environment for you and your family. Whether you're dealing with a fresh spill, a stubborn stain, or just overdue for a general refresh, here's everything you need to know about how to clean your carpet effectively.

Carpet Cleaning Tips

Vacuum the whole room horizontally and then again vertically. This lifts the carpet fibres in both directions and gets the maximum amount of dirt and debris out of your carpet. Make sure to clean the roller, and empty the vacuum bag /filter regularly.

Where possible, take care of stains as soon as they happen. Most carpets today are made to resist liquid penetration for a time, so if you simply blot it dry with a clean cloth right away, the stain may not have a chance to set.

DIY Carpet Cleaning Methods

For everyday maintenance and minor stains, there are a few tried-and-true methods you can try at home.

Just a heads up before we start: DIY cleaning methods may not be suitable for all carpet types and can cause damage, discolouration, or be ineffective on certain stains. Always test any solution on a small, hidden area first before applying it more broadly. When in doubt, it's best to call in the professionals.

Baking soda for odours

If your carpet is smelling a little stale, you can break out the baking soda. Sprinkle it generously over the affected area, let it sit for at least 15 minutes (or overnight for stronger odours), then vacuum it up thoroughly.

Dish soap and warm water for stains

Try mixing one tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of warm water. Using a clean cloth, blot the stain gently (never scrub, as this pushes the stain deeper into the fibres). Work from the outside of the stain inward, and rinse with cold water once the stain lifts.

White vinegar solution.

For tougher stains, a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water can help break down residue. Apply it to the stain, leave for a few minutes, then blot clean with a dry cloth.

Professional Carpet Cleaning

Sometimes a carpet needs more than a home remedy can offer. Deeply embedded dirt, persistent stains, and high-traffic areas often require professional-grade equipment and expertise to restore properly.
