How to Clean a Front Loader Washing Machine
Front loader washing machines are great for their efficiency and gentle care of fabrics, but even machines made to clean require cleaning of their own. Over time, detergent residue, mildew and grime build up inside your washer, affecting performance and potentially damaging internal parts. Fortunately, we’ve put together this handy guide on how to clean a front loader washing machine. As keeping your machine fresh can be straightforward with the right approach.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather white vinegar, baking soda, a microfibre cloth, and an old toothbrush. These simple household items are part of a natural cleaning solution to get your machine looking and smelling like new. If you’re dealing with deep-seated grime and gunk, it might be best to use a store bought cleaner. Just make sure you follow all instructions carefully.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
Clean the door seal first. The rubber gasket around the door is a prime spot for mould and mildew to develop. Pull back the seal gently and wipe away any visible grime with a damp cloth. For stubborn build-up, you could try a paste of baking soda and water, scrub with an old toothbrush, then wipe clean. Make sure to dry the seal thoroughly when you're done.
Tackle the detergent drawer. Remove the drawer completely — most models allow you to do this by pressing a release tab. Soak it in warm, soapy water for 15 minutes, then scrub away the residue.
Tip: Don't forget to clean inside the drawer cavity itself! mould can grow in this hidden space.
Run a hot cleaning cycle. For a natural way to clean your washing machine, try pouring two cups of white vinegar directly into the drum and run the machine on its hottest, longest cycle. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that breaks down detergent residue and neutralises odours. Once that cycle finishes, you could also sprinkle half a cup of baking soda into the drum and run another hot cycle. This combination can help to eliminate any remaining bacteria and leaves your drum sparkling.
Clean the filter. Locate the small access panel at the base of your machine. Place a towel underneath before opening it, as water will probably spill out. Unscrew the filter cap, remove any lint or debris, rinse the filter under running water, then replace it securely.
Wipe down the exterior. Finish by wiping the outside of the machine with a damp microfibre cloth, paying attention to the control panel and door glass.
To prevent build-up between cleans, leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open after each wash to allow airflow and discourage mould growth.
