How to Clean Your Stovetop
The stovetop is one of those areas of the kitchen that can go from clean to chaotic in a single cooking session. Splattered sauce, boiled-over pasta water, and baked-on grease have a way of accumulating fast — and the longer you leave them, the harder they are to shift. Knowing how to clean your stovetop properly, and doing it regularly, makes the whole job far easier and keeps your kitchen looking its best.
Cleaning by Stovetop Type
The right approach to cleaning your stovetop depends on the type you have, so it's worth knowing what you're working with before you start.
Gas stovetops have the most components to deal with — grates, burner caps, and the surface itself. Remove the grates and burner caps first and soak them in hot, soapy water for at least 15 minutes to loosen baked-on grease. While they're soaking, wipe down the stovetop surface with a degreaser or a solution of dish soap and warm water, using a non-scratch scourer for any stubborn spots. Scrub the soaked components with a stiff brush, rinse thoroughly, and make sure everything is completely dry before reassembling — moisture near gas burners is something you always want to avoid.
Ceramic and glass stovetops need a gentler touch to avoid scratching the surface. Once the stovetop has cooled completely, apply a small amount of specialised ceramic cooktop cleaner or try a paste made from baking soda and water. Use a soft cloth or a dedicated ceramic scraper held at a low angle to lift any burnt-on residue. Avoid abrasive scrubbers at all costs, as they'll leave permanent scratches. Finish with a dry microfibre cloth to buff the surface to a streak-free shine.
Electric coil stovetops allow you to remove the coils and drip pans for separate cleaning. Soak the drip pans in hot soapy water, wipe down the coils carefully with a damp cloth — never submerge them in water — and clean the stovetop surface underneath while everything is removed.
Quick Tips for a Cleaner Stovetop
- Wipe down your stovetop after every cook to prevent build-up
- Never use abrasive scrubbers on glass or ceramic surfaces
- Always let the stovetop cool completely before cleaning
- Soak stubborn grates and drip pans rather than scrubbing dry
- Baking soda paste can be a safe, effective option for most stovetop types (just make sure to patch test first!)
- Dry all components thoroughly before reassembling
